About Union Rescue Mission

Providing spiritual and physical bread of life.

Missions Statement

Union Rescue Mission purpose is to reach the least, the last, and the lost with the physical and spiritual bread of life through its ministries of men’s shelter, women’s and children’s shelter, family shelter, soup kitchen, Penny Pincher thrift store, and The Living Room day room.

We believe that both the physical and spiritual needs must be stabilized before the root problems of homelessness and poverty can be addressed.

We provide hot meals to all who wish to come with no questions asked and shelter those who request it with no one turned away because of race, gender, or creed.

Ministering Since 1937

Union Rescue Mission, well into its second half century, developed from humble beginnings into a dignified, active, compassionate ministry dedicated to one purpose – that of aiding the physical and spiritual lives of individuals in need.

Founded in 1937, the Mission avails itself to the homeless as a haven from distress, structuring hope for the future. Beginning in a one-room store front on Jackson Street, to its present multiple locations consisting of: chapel, day room, offices, and thrift store, the Mission has seen tremendous growth since 1937, not only in the physical, but in the spiritual lives of the men, women and children who come to the mission for help.

Many expansions were necessary over the years to accommodate the growing needs of the community. In 1970, Friendly Homes was built to provide housing for the elderly. URM also operates The Penny Pincher thrift store to provide for the material needs of families.

Union Rescue Missions’ uniqueness arises from its never deviating stand on the Word of God and its importance in stabilizing a life spiritually, as well as meeting the physical and temporal needs of the individual. Spiritual life is the basis for effective life-style change that will last.

URM is unique because it provides services in a Christ-centered atmosphere. URM is the largest facility of this type in North-Central West Virginia and has been a leader in the fight against homelessness and poverty.

We believe that both the physical and spiritual needs must be stabilized before the root problems of homelessness and poverty can be addressed. We provide hot meals to all who wish to come with no questions asked and shelter those who request it with no one turned away because of race, gender, or creed.
